Mrs. Sulzer's invitation: manuscript, 1913

A combination sketchbook and autograph album compiled by the female students of Washington Irving High School in New York City. This was a special invitation for the First Lady of New York State, Mrs, William Sulzer and friends to attend a special reception hosted by the students in May 1913 at the 69th Regiment Armory. This item includes approximately 4718 signatures and numerous pen and ink sketches of young women engaged in various school related activities. Most of the sketches were touched-up with water coloring.

New York politician William Sulzer (1863-1941) served as a United States Representative from New York (1895-1912). During 1912 Sulzer chaired the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs. In January, 1913 Sulzer was elected governor of New York State. Shortly after his inauguration, he was impeached by the New York State Assembly on charges of having diverted campaign funds to his own use.
